iMovie 2

Video Editing Tool Outputs QuickTime

iMovie is a basic video editing tool allowing users to create and manipulate simple home movies captured via their camcorder. Finished movies can be exported back to the camcorder for television display or storage on videotape, as well as saved in the QuickTime 4 format for computer and or Web related uses such as E-Mail or posting to a Web page. Though iMovie version 1 is still available as a free download, the new version will only be available bundled with all FireWire-enabled Macs or sold through the Apple Store (beginning in September).

Movies are captured via the FireWire connection to the user's camcorder, with the user able to control the camcorder's functions directly from within the iMovie console. Tools exist for adding effects to clips, such as background music, sound effects, voiceovers, titles, and transitions between individual clips such as fade out, cross dissolve, and push right. An additional effects panel in the latest version of iMovie allows users to add effects such as black and white, soft focus, or water ripple effects.

Finished movies can be stored on the computer or shared/streamed through the Web in the QuickTime format. As part of their iTools offering, Apple offers free to Mac users iDisk, 20mb for the storage and sharing of personal files via the Internet; and HomePage, a free personal Web page area for users.

According to Apple, iMovie 2 will come bundled with all new FireWire enabled Macs, and will be sold from the Apple Store at a retail price of $49 beginning in September. The other Web-based iTools are free and available now; as is the previous version of iMovie, v1.02.
